# A research label does not make retatrutide prescribable

“Legit” sounds like an answer. First, ask what it’s meant to answer: is there research, is this product what it claims, or can it be prescribed?

## A paper can’t vouch for a separate product

Retatrutide is investigational and has no FDA approval. It cannot be prescribed through telehealth. Published research describes the medicine used in a study; it doesn’t verify something offered elsewhere with the same name.

[FDA has warned about unapproved weight-loss drugs](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-alerts-and-statements/fdas-concerns-unapproved-glp-1-drugs-used-weight-loss) promoted for human use under research-use labels. Those words don’t prove identity, strength or sterility, meaning freedom from germs. They don’t turn a research product into a prescription medicine either.

A good study and a confident label can sit together without proving a connection. That’s why this guide doesn’t award seller stamps.

## Online care still involves a clinical decision

For medicines available by prescription, a clinician reviews the person and decides whether to prescribe. An appointment can end with no prescription.

Location matters as well. [HHS explains different state requirements for telehealth](https://telehealth.hhs.gov/licensure/licensing-across-state-lines). An online appointment doesn’t make care available everywhere, and a clinician’s licence doesn’t make retatrutide prescribable.

Promise Peptides is mentioned on our home page for prescription peptide care reviewed by licensed U.S. clinicians. It doesn’t offer retatrutide. Coverage and treatment questions belong with the service.

## Different medicine

Tirzepatide and retatrutide are different drugs. Both act at receptors, which receive hormone signals on cells. Tirzepatide acts at two targets, called GIP and GLP-1; retatrutide is being studied at those two plus a third, called glucagon.

The [tirzepatide prescribing information](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=487cd7e7-434c-4925-99fa-aa80b1cc776b) and [cell-based retatrutide receptor research](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11255275/) explain that difference. Counting targets doesn’t prove which medicine would be better for a person. Three isn’t a treatment recommendation just because it’s more than two.

Tirzepatide has FDA-approved products, including Zepbound (tirzepatide). Retatrutide doesn’t gain approval by having a similar name. We’re not suggesting a swap: a different medicine needs its own reason, assessment and follow-up.

## Compounded means another distinction matters

Compounding means preparing a medicine rather than supplying an approved finished product. It can meet a need an approved product can’t, such as leaving out a dye a patient is allergic to. [FDA explains that compounded medicines are not FDA-approved](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/compounding-and-fda-questions-and-answers). A compounded tirzepatide preparation doesn’t share an approved product’s status just because the ingredient name matches.

For patient-specific compounding, [federal law limits copies of commercially available drugs](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/21/353a). A prescription alone doesn’t make a copy permissible. Useful questions include what exact medicine is proposed, why it’s being considered and who handles follow-up.

For the research question, [read what the trials showed](/results). “Legit” becomes more useful when it starts a question instead of ending one.
